Curriculum Statement & Subjects
Basis
Our curriculum is based on the national curriculum but goes far wider and deeper to ensure that all pupils achieve well and have a detailed knowledge of all subjects. We have clearly defined areas of learning basing our curriculum on an EBACC model (English Baccalaureate which emphasises attainment in English, mathematics, science, history, geography and languages). We have also ensured that our arts offer gives as much weight and detail to ‘foundation’ subjects as our core curriculum. Our pupils learn French throughout key stage two. We teach RE once per week. Parents have the right to withdraw children from RE lessons, however, we strongly recommend that children learn about all faiths to give them a broader experience and perspective on the world. If you are considering removing your child from these lessons, please speak to a member of staff first. We will require any withdrawal to be put in writing.
Phonics
The phonics scheme we follow is Bug Club Phonics. Our whole school reading scheme is Bug Club but incorporates a number of other schemes to support a love of reading, including Collins Big Cat and Oxford Reading Tree. Children can access Bug Club online via a link on their year group page. To find out what your child will learn in phonics and spelling, please see the progression documents below.
Diversity
To ensure our curriculum is as diverse as possible we give children the opportunity to engage in ‘cultural capital’ lessons. These are designed to offer children different experiences from drama to understanding climate change to supporting the local community. Some of these areas of learning incorporate entrepreneurial skills. All pupils engage in a detailed computing package. Alongside this they are utilising ICT skills throughout other subjects. We know that keeping children safe online is an important factor of modern life and we therefore give pupils the opportunity to explore social media in a variety of context and learn to use them appropriately and safely.
Intention
The intention for our curriculum offer is therefore encapsulated in these three statements:
- High academic outcomes for all pupils regardless of their starting points.
- High quality arts based teaching which develops pupils knowledge and skills in-depth in art, PE, DT, music and RE.
- Extended opportunities for self-development. Access to a much broader cultural capital based curriculum that allows pupils to invest time in self-study, understanding of social media, drama and enterprise.
For information on what is currently being taught in each year group please refer to the class pages under the Children’s Area. There you will find a knowledge organiser for this term.
