Enrichment

Enrichment gives pupils opportunities to develop skills, interests and experiences beyond the classroom. Through clubs, visits, competitions, pupil responsibilities and wider learning activities, students build confidence, creativity, teamwork, and resilience while discovering new passions and talents.

Bikeability

All Reception pupils at Burwell Village College Primary School, begin their ‘Learn to ride’ journey with Bikeability Balance bicycle training.

  • Develop cycle handling and awareness skills
  • Build confidence ahead of future training

In Year 3, pupils have the opportunity to take part in Bikeability Level 1. Pupils learn the following:

  • Maintain your cycle: make sure your ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs
  • Glide: smooth, calm and collected
  • Control your bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. You’ll even learn to pedal one handed!
  • Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control
  • Be aware of your surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles

In Year 5, pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills further during Bikeability Level 2 and 3 training: Pupils learn the following:

  • Start and stop with more confidence
  • Pass stationary vehicles parked on a road
  • Understand the road: signals, signs and road markings
  • Negotiate the road: including quiet junctions, crossroads and roundabouts
  • Share the road with other vehicles
  • Use the best riding position for any situation.
  • Ride alongside other cyclists.
  • Respond confidently when a situation changes. For example, when a vehicle pulls out in front of you.
Mini First Aid

All pupils are provided with opportunities to develop the knowledge and confidence to care for others – demonstrating another way to be compassionate. Through two levels of first aid training, students learn practical lifesaving skills while building empathy, responsibility and the confidence to support those in need.

Year 2 Workshop

Mini First Aid provide a fun, interactive workshop that aims to help young children understand what is happening to their bodies if they are hurt. During the workshop, the children will hear a story about a brave but accident-prone, little boy. The title of the book is ‘The Mini Adventures of Freddie’.

The workshop also teaches the children what to do when someone is bleeding, has bumped their head or when someone won’t wake up. The children learn how to reach help in an emergency. As part of this, children are encouraged to learn the first line of their address.

Year 6 Workshop

During the Year 6 workshop, pupils revisit how to call 999 and learn how to stay calm and respond effectively in an emergency. By the end of the session, they will be able to perform CPR, care for an unconscious casualty, and provide basic first aid for bleeding, head injuries, burns, and choking.

iRock

All pupils, from Reception to Year 6, have the opportunity to become part of a band.

Pupils who attend receive a weekly, 30-minute rock and pop band session with one of the iRock professional musicians. Playing a variety of instruments, each group of children learns to play instruments as part of a band, encouraging collaboration and working as a team, all whilst levelling up their musical ability and developing a love of music.

Children choose their own band name and learn a popular rock or pop song that has been expertly adapted to suit their age group. Throughout the iRock sessions, their creativity and confidence are unleashed whilst collaborating as a group, culminating in an unforgettable end-of-term performance.

iRock School of Music, emphasises teamwork, collaboration, and listening, while enhancing confidence, social skills, and positive mental health. Through teamwork and fostering an environment where children can take creative risks, they grow more resilient and confident in performing and speaking, all while developing a passion for music.

The iRock programme has been designed to be totally inclusive for every child, regardless of their experience, ability, or learning style.
