DT Electrical Systems Y5 & Y6

Design and Technology – Electrical Systems

During DT lessons, pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 have been busy researching, designing and creating interactive cards using their knowledge of electrical circuits.

Design Brief

Design and produce an interactive Christmas card for pre-school children incorporating simple electrical systems to add excitement, such as: lights, buzzers, motors and/or switches.

Design Criteria

* The design must contain a series or parallel circuit.

* Use a low-voltage battery for safety.

* Components should be hidden within the card to avoid loose wires or hazards.

* Designs should be visually appealing for the target market.

This afternoon, they shared their final products with Reception pupils to see if their interactive card met the last bullet point of  the design criteria.

Community – Compassionate Citizens

Cultural Capital – Compassionate Citizens

Pupils from Year 5 and 6 were delighted to welcome members of the local Day Centre for an afternoon of games, coffee and cake! The event was a wonderful opportunity for connection across generations. Everyone enjoyed playing a variety of  board and card games.
A standout moment was the ‘plank’ challenge, led by an 81-year-old Day Centre member who impressed everyone with their strength and endurance – a true testament to staying active at any age!
The afternoon was a brilliant success, bringing smiles, laughter and a sense of community to all involved.

Enterprise – Brighten Up Burwell

Community – Brighten Up Burwell

In Year 3 and 4, the children have been learning all about enterprise in their cultural capital lessons. Over the last 10 weeks, they have taken part in the ‘Brighten up Burwell’ project, with the aim of completing an act of kindness around the village. Throughout this time, the children worked as an organisation to research and create mood boards, make decisions about money and profits, they held a bake sale to raise money and purchased the items needed for their project. Once they had done this, the children completed their act of kindness and distributed their plants around the village for people to take home.

Community – Litter Detectives

Litter Detectives – Y1/2 Cultural Capital (Community)

The Litter Detectives were out and about in the village on Wednesday.

During their cultural capital unit, the group have learnt about what is means to be part of a community and the impact littering can have on all living things within it.

The group collected litter within the school community. Whilst doing so, they collected data and analysed it to discover where the most litter gathered – very valuable information to give Mr Bish. This wasn’t enough for our eager Litter Pickers. They wanted to volunteer further, within the wider community, so we took a walk to one of the local parks and collected litter along the way.

To develop our understanding of the individuals and organisations that make a meaningful impact in our local community through their work and volunteer efforts, we welcomed Justin Heron, co-founder of Spectrum, as a guest speaker. Spectrum, a multi-award-winning children’s charity led by parents, offers events, sessions and vital support for local families of children with Autism, additional needs, learning difficulties and disabilities.
The inspiring talk engaged the children, who asked thoughtful questions that helped shape the planning of their own upcoming community event.

Donations From Local Co-op

Thank you to the Co-op for donating refreshments for our Busy Bees’ Cafes.

Every term, we host Busy Bees’ Cafes for children and their parents to work together and celebrate reading.

This is a fantastic opportunity to support children’s creativity, pride they take in sharing their work with their parents and strengthens the connection between parents, school and children. Our children thoroughly enjoy this experience.

Y2B Visit Burwell Museum & Windmill

Year 2 Visit Burwell Museum and Windmill

We had a fabulous afternoon at the Burwell Museum and Windmill yesterday.

The children asked lots of questions linked to their learning in history. In the Victorian classroom, we were able to use artefacts as a source of information in order to answer some of the questions we recorded before our visit. We also took a close look at different modes of transport over time. We were impressed with the variety of carts that were available depending on their purpose and how much they cost.
